What to inspect on a used container

  • Doors: they should open and close without a fight, and the rubber seals shouldn't be torn.
  • Roof: look for dents that hold water and any holes. From inside with the doors shut, check for light coming through.
  • Floor: soft spots or heavy staining can mean old leaks or spills.
  • Corners and frame: surface rust is normal. Rust that flakes away in chunks or goes through the steel isn't.
  • Smell: some boxes carried chemicals or food. Ask about past cargo if it matters for your use.

How to compare quotes

Ask every supplier for the same things so you're comparing like with like: container price, delivery fee, the grade in writing, whether photos are of the actual unit, any warranty, payment terms, and the delivery window.

Cheapest isn't always best. A slightly higher price for a unit you've seen photos of, with a clear delivery date, is often the better deal.

Buying questions

Should I buy new or used?

Buy new (one-trip) if appearance matters or you plan to convert it. Used cargo-worthy or wind and water tight units are usually the better value for plain storage.

Can I inspect a used container first?

Many suppliers allow a yard visit or send photos of the actual unit. Ask for photos of the doors, floor, roof and corners.

Is delivery included in the price?

Sometimes, sometimes not. Ask each supplier to list the container price and delivery fee separately so quotes are easy to compare.

Do containers come with a warranty?

Some suppliers offer one, often longer on new units. Terms vary, so ask for it in writing.
